Bringing design to life through animation is one of my favourite challenges. At every step of the design process I work very hard to create design that will not only look great as a 2D piece of print or screen work but also as a moving entity with character which will engage emotionally and entertain the viewer.
The pieces shown here have been created using a variety of tools. Artwork like labels are created in Illustrator, image editing in Photoshop, After Effects for 2D animation, Blender for 3D animation. I have also been experimenting with Cavalry for a more generative approach to 2D animation.
First up is my latest show reel.
The next video was shown at ILA on their U shaped virtual production screen for my graduation exhibition.
This screen wraps around the viewer and it is difficult to gauge the scale from this web video.
Some videos that were featured in the show reel. I show them here to demonstrate how I incorporate music/sound into my design process.
This Ecersly's spot was designed during my TAFE studies. We were required to pick a Rundle Mall shop and create a short animation to be notionally shown on the screen in the Mall. All the transitions were hand animated while the logo reveal was keyframe animated after breaking the logo down into its respective parts.
This MIFF project was another TAFE assignment around campaign building. We were required to find an exisiting film festival from any time and use the branding assets and other collateral in a variety of ways, one of which would be a package and the other a promo piece. I chose the 2014 Festival as I really love the design Beci Orpin created and felt I could really bring it all to life with motion. This involved recreating all the artwork and the logo in Illustrator and importing those into After Effects as there were only low quality scans of the original available.
This piece was created for the typography class. There were multiple sections, including creating a typeface from any kind of old sign found in the streets. This piece shows that typeface, Galvo. A spread of type was also created that discussed a chosen architect. The architect I chose was Robin Boyd.
Illustrator was used for the text layout, keeping everything on seperate layers so that it could all be animated in After Effects as layers. The final reveal was created in Blender so I could "paint" the name onto a 3D modelled piece of corrugated galvo and composite in the real world photo. The paint on effect was animated in Photoshop for use in Blender.
An older packaging design project that I repurposed for another TAFE subject where we had to enhance or add value to an older piece of work we had created. This energy drink in a Tetra pack was modelled and animated in Blender, the label artwork built in Illustrator and the final yellow streaks and splashes were hand animated in Photoshop.
This piece was done for fun after seeing one of those Air BNB ads that had a room coming together. I decided to give it ago as it presented several challenges. The first being that a room full of things needs those things modelled and textured. So I set about building this fantasy office which contains real world objects I own, graphic design projects I have created and furniture that came out of my imagination, including a rug with my logo.
I continue to experiment and learn various animation techniques such as experimenting with Cavalry. I have also setup studio space to begin a journey in stop frame animation which is fun and challenging. However there is nothing to really show of that quiet yet. Stay tuned though!
Further experiments and finished pieces can also be seen on my Instagram.
